Two formats, and only one of them has anybody watching live

In an OnDemand interview you record answers to preset questions by yourself. HireVue's framing is that unlike a typical interview you can complete a video-based assessment anytime, anywhere. The walkthrough is a fixed sequence: open the invitation, read the requirements, see the company and role, accept the hiring company's terms and conditions, possibly watch an intro video, then run an equipment test that requires camera and microphone access.

A Live interview is the opposite: a scheduled real-time video call. HireVue is careful to say that while it provides the interviewing platform, the interview itself is set up and hosted by the company you applied to, and that your invitation includes a system test link it recommends using at least 24 hours ahead.

When your screen is part of it

This is the part most candidates do not expect. HireVue documents that some OnDemand interviews require candidates to share their computer screen while performing certain tasks on the computer, in order to demonstrate skills and proficiencies — and that you may also be asked to share your screen during a Live interview.

The requirements are concrete. Screen sharing needs a current version of Chrome or Edge on a desktop or laptop and is not available on mobile devices. On an Apple computer, HireVue walks candidates through granting the browser Screen Recording permission in the system's privacy settings before the share step will work.

That permission request is worth reading literally. Granting a browser screen-recording access at the operating-system level is what makes any in-page capture possible, and it is a different thing from letting a page use your camera.

Where the documentation stops

HireVue's public pages are thinner on integrity mechanics than an assessment vendor's, and the honest thing to do is say so rather than fill it in. For coding assessments, HireVue's product page describes automatically detecting potentially plagiarised submissions, and its technical assessment page makes a general claim about spotting attempts at cheating in the screening process. Neither page sets out what is captured or how.

What HireVue does state clearly is a limit. It says it never uses the video recording of an interview to identify a candidate, which is sometimes called facial recognition. And it is explicit about practice: practice questions are never uploaded or submitted to anyone, cannot be viewed by anyone but you, and are gone once you move past the playback.

What is recorded, and what is only flagged

What HireVue's documentation does not say

The gaps are as useful as the features, and they are the part nobody else writes down. Where HireVue states a limit, it is quoted below. Where it is silent, the entry says it is silent — undocumented is not the same as absent, and we are not going to present it as one.

• Practice answers go nowhere. HireVue states that practice questions are never uploaded or submitted to anyone, cannot be viewed by anyone except you, and are gone once you move past the playback.
• A Live interview is hosted by the company you applied to, not by HireVue. HireVue describes itself as providing the platform while the hiring company sets up and hosts the interview.
• HireVue's public candidate documentation describes no browser lockdown, no periodic screenshot capture and no desktop proctoring application. Where a page is silent it is silent, and we are not going to infer a capability from that silence in either direction.
• Its public product pages say little about the internals of its coding assessments beyond plagiarism detection and a general claim about spotting cheating attempts, so treat the specifics as undocumented.

What candidates get wrong about HireVue

The first is assuming HireVue is only a talking-head video tool. Some OnDemand interviews require a screen share while you perform tasks, and that requirement is documented in HireVue's own help centre. If your invitation mentions demonstrating a skill on your computer, expect it.

The second is trying it on a phone. Screen sharing is desktop-only and needs Chrome or Edge, so an interview that includes it cannot be completed on a mobile device — worth knowing before you are five minutes from a deadline.

The third is skipping practice. There are three generic practice questions, unlimited retries, and you can play your answers back. You cannot do that with the real ones, which makes practice the only chance to hear your own audio and see your own lighting.

The fourth is forgetting the room. HireVue tells candidates the employer will be able to see what is in the background of the video, and offers advice about lighting and sitting with your back to a window.

Worth knowing before you sit down

• Screen sharing needs a current Chrome or Edge on a desktop or laptop. HireVue says it is not available on mobile devices, so an interview that requires it cannot be done on a phone.
• On macOS, the browser needs Screen Recording permission in System Settings before the share step will work — HireVue documents the exact sequence in its help centre.
• There are three generic practice questions and you can redo them without limit, and you can play your practice answers back before recording for real.
• You cannot review your actual OnDemand responses the way you can review practice ones, which is precisely why the practice pass is worth taking.
• An OnDemand interview is asynchronous — HireVue's line is that you can complete it anytime, anywhere — so choose the hour and the room deliberately.
• The employer sees your background. HireVue's own advice covers lighting and where to sit relative to a window.

What this means if you use an AI assistant

Where a HireVue interview requires a screen share, the operating-system permission you grant is Screen Recording for the browser — HireVue documents that step on macOS explicitly. That is a full-desktop capture path, and the same honest caveat applies as everywhere else: what a compositor does or does not include in that capture is not something any vendor publishes, ourselves included.

The camera is the primary channel in every HireVue format, and it is pointed at a room. HireVue's own advice is about lighting and what is behind you, which is a good reminder that the employer is watching a person, not a desktop.

An OnDemand interview is asynchronous and reviewed after the fact, so the reviewer has time. A recruiter watching a recorded answer can rewind, and eye movement over a long pause is legible on video in a way it is not in a live call.
